Abstract:
Science is not performed in isolation - it is influenced by the people who perform it, and the world in which it is performed. Unfortunately, certain groups of people face bigger barriers to success when on their journey in science, and thus it is vital that we work together as a community to remove these obstacles for us all. To address this issue, a committee of students and staff from the Astrophysics group at the University of Warwick started their own version of an “Equitea”, a forum to discuss topics related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) in relation to Astronomy, Physics and STEM as a whole.
In this talk we will go in-depth into why and how we created the Equitea forum at Warwick, including personal statements from the Equitea committee, and present our experience since its inception earlier this year. In addition, we will discuss topics covered thus far (e.g. “The Challenges of Maternity and Academia” and “Moving for your Career in Astronomy”) and planned sessions, as well as our compiled resources. The overall goal is to encourage our community to set up a similar initiative at their own institutions by providing a step-by-step guide to do so, with the ultimate goal of making astronomy a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive space for all.
